She began acting as a child in a great variety of roles. She starred in Taxi Driver and Bugsy Malone both 1976, when only 14. Subsequent films include The Accused 1988 and The Silence of the Lambs 1991 (she won Academy Awards for both), Sommersby 1993, and Nell 1994. She made her directorial debut with Little Man Tate 1991.
